Science at the centre - Ulverston High School

Students at Ulverstone High School are deepening their knowledge of sustainability science in the school's newly opened energy-efficient science centre.

The centre was constructed under the Building the Education Revolution program, at a cost of
$1.73 million.

Using a wind turbine and solar panels, the centre supplies some of its own energy. Fully insulated and with energy efficiency lighting and glazing, it also boasts a range of other features, including:

  • an outdoor science classroom
  • a greenhouse with an automatic venting system
    wetlands
  • a fish tank for ecology studies
  • a productive garden which will be planted with Aboriginal food plants, Tasmanian endemic plants and fruit and vegetables
  • a meeting room and kitchen for community groups

Students will be able to monitor power usage and weather patterns through a state of the art energy monitoring dashboard, giving them opportunities for practical, hands-on science learning.
