What the Government is doing to reduce Tasmania's emissions

There is a lot of work underway in Tasmania that is helping to reduce the State�s emissions, helping us to adapt to the changes in our climate, and preparing us for the transition to a low-carbon economy. Tasmanian Climate Action Council

The Tasmanian Climate Action Council has been established to provide high level, independent advice to Premier David Bartlett on Tasmania�s response to climate change. The role of the Council includes providing advice on setting emissions reduction targets for Tasmania, and reviewing progress being made towards the targets. It will also contribute ideas that help generate the bold ideas that will place Tasmania in a leadership position in the emerging low-carbon economy. Wedges analysis of the Tasmanian economy

The Tasmanian Government has appointed respected Australian strategic consulting firm, McLennan Magasanik Associates (MMA), to conduct a major analysis of the Tasmanian economy. MMA will model Tasmanian�s past and projected emissions profile to develop a wedges based analysis to assess the State�s best opportunities to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The analysis will also consider the impact of the new Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and expanded Renewable Energy Target Scheme on our economy. The project is now underway and the results will inform the setting of interim emissions reduction targets for Tasmania.

Climate change impact statements

Work is nearing completion on a process for integrating climate change considerations into all relevant Cabinet papers, Budget Review Committee papers and Budget submissions. The new Climate Change Impact Statements will be introduced in the coming weeks.

Discussion paper on minimum feed-in tariffs

Last year a Discussion Paper was released for consultation on the development of a Tasmanian policy on feed-in tariffs from solar and other renewable sources of electricity which are generated by households and small business, where excess electricity can be exported to the electricity grid. Submissions closed in November 2008. Over 40 submissions were received and are presently being collated. Low Income Housing Energy Efficiency Project

The University of Tasmania is conducting a literature review of research in national and international jurisdictions that assesses the benefits of investing in energy efficiency measures in low income housing. The information will help shape an energy efficiency training and insulation installation program by Housing Tasmania, to be undertaken by mid-2009.
