Tasmania's emissions

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has estimated total global greenhouse gas emissions in 2004 at 49 gigatonnes (billion tonnes) of carbon-dioxide equivalent (CO2-e). In 2006 Australia emitted 576 megatonnes (million tonnes) CO2-e. This is less than 1.5% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. In 2006, Tasmania emitted about 8.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Most of Tasmania’s emissions came from transport, agriculture, manufacturing and construction.

Tasmania's emission profile by sector

The Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008 sets a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of below 60 per cent of 1990 levels by 2050.
