Tasmanian Climate classroomWhat is climate change? There is now overwhelming evidence that human activities, including the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, occur naturally in the earth’s atmosphere. They trap the sun’s energy within the atmosphere and are important to keep the earth warm enough to sustain life. Human activity since industrialisation has contributed to an unprecedented increase in greenhouse gases, and this means more of the sun’s energy is trapped, causing the earth to warm faster than at any other time during the last one thousand years. This warming creates an imbalance in our climate and the earth’s biological systems.
